The Tragedy of King Lear
Planning to will the largest portion of his kingdom to the daughter who can articulate her filial love most effectively, King Lear is furious when his youngest of three daughters, the unwed Cordelia, simply states
I cannot heave my heart into my mouth.
As the elder sisters, Regan and Goneril, each flaunted their love with exuberant metaphors, Lear resolves to divide his kingdom between them, disinheriting Cordelia. Worried that their father has gone mad, and fearful such a descent might hold consequences to their inheritances, Regan and Goneril decide to exert their newfound authority by rebuking their father when he attempts to enter their territories. A mocking Fool who travels with Lear underscores Lear`s lack of scruples in prematurely yielding his power. With nowhere to go, Lear finds himself alone as a storm rages; a crown of wildflowers poignantly emphasizes Lear`s loss of power, and the disintegration of his sanity. As Lear goes increasingly mad in his wanderings,...

Sword of the Rightful King
The newly crowned King Arthur is unsure of himself; worse, the people are unsure of him. Too many people want the throne, and treachery is everywhere. Merlin must do something before the king is betrayed, or murdered, or--worst of all--gets married. So Merlin magically places a sword into a slab of rock, lets it be known that whosoever removes the blade will rule all of England, and invites any man who would dare, to try to pull out the sword.
After a bit of showmanship, Arthur will draw the blade (with a little magical help, of course), and the people will rally around the young king.
Except someone else pulls the sword out first. . . .

The King Of Attolia
The third Greek-inflected fantasy concerning the adventures of Eugenides, the former Queen`s Thief of Eddis and current King of the title, is mainly told from the perspective of Attolian Guardsman Costis. The Attolian Guard deeply resents the marriage of their Queen to Eugenides, believing that he (and the Eddisian army) coerced her into it, and that their new King is an unmanly fool utterly incapable of regal behavior. When Costis, goaded beyond reason, actually strikes Eugenides in the face, Eugenides shocks everyone when instead of executing Costis, he takes the young Guard into his personal service. It is but the first of many surprises Costis will experience in Eugenides`s company as he gradually learns the King`s true nature.
